My Favorite Met Gala Looks!

As we have all recently seen the Met Gala 2022 took place on Monday, May 2, 2022. For a little background, the Met is always held on the first Monday in May. There's no actual reason as to why it's always held on this day and since its creation in 1948 it has been held in April, December, and November. For more info on the Met Gala, I recommend watching The First Monday in May, which is a documentary about the 2015 gala.

The gala is the fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute and every year features a different theme and a different host. This year it was sponsored by Instagram, hosted by Regina King, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Blake Lively (bless her), and Ryan Reynolds and the theme was 'In America: An Anthology of Fashion" with Gilded Glamour being the dress code. This is the second part of the theme of the 2021 Met Gala 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion".

In case you're wondering how your favorite celebrity showed up at the gala the answer is: they were invited. Brands use this opportunity to buy tables and invite celebrities to wear their clothes. (So when someone doesn't dress for the theme they are not likely to be invited back, yikes (not to mention it's just rude) A table costs anywhere between $200,000 to $300,000. I have never heard of someone buying an individual ticket but I've seen some sources say they range around $35,000.

A few weeks ago I asked on my Instagram if people would be interested in hearing about my favorite looks from the past year's galas and a few of you guys said yes, so I thought why not 🤷. These are in no particular order and are just my opinions so please don't bully me 🙃also this list is in no way exhaustive and are the ones that were swirling around in my head recently.

1. Anything Zendaya has worn
I think we have all recognized by now the power Zendaya has and how whenever she steps on the carpet she will eat everybody up!!! Every look I've seen from her and every theme she's dressed for  has been phenom and she should continually be invited back!
2015 Theme: China through the looking glass

2016 Theme: Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology

2017 theme: Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between
(also I read she was sick with the flu and in the hospital the night before and still turned up like this!!!)

2018 theme: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

2019 theme: Camp: Notes on Fashion

2. Sarah Jessica Parker Met Gala 2022
Not only was this look on theme (and one of the few, might I add) but it also has great historical value. It pays tribute to Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley who was the first black female fashion designer in the White House. “The idea was to highlight the dichotomy between the extravagant, over-the-top proportions of the time period, and the disparity that was happening in America at the time.” Rodgers said in an interview with Vogue. Christopher John Rodgers is known for being a designer who uses a lot of color in his designs so to put aside his style to truly pay homage is breathtaking to me and shows the overreaching arch that fashion can truly have.

3. Blake Lively Met Gala 2018
The theme in 2018 was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination and truthfully almost everyone understood the assignment and stepped out looking magnificent. Here Blake truly looks like an actual goddess and for that, I think she wins.
Designer Atelier Versace

4. Chadwick Boseman Met Gala 2018
I cried (no joke) when I saw Chadwick Boseman at the 2018 Met Gala. As I said before, this was truly the year that people decided to be on theme but Chadwick... HE ATE THIS THEME UP. No man will ever look as good as he did on this red carpet. He stepped out looking like historically accurate Jesus and with this look he saved our souls. What could be more on theme for Heavenly Bodies than that??? In fact, he did so well that men should never be invited again.

5. Timothee Chalamet Met Gala 2021
Don't even start with me you already knew he was gonna be on this list somewhere 🙄. I have spoken about this look from TC many times but I love truly love it. The theme for last year was 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion' and I think he hits the nail on the head. Wearing a full suit on top and sweatpants on the bottom I think he looks very on-brand for America. I mean who hasn't gone to a Zoom meeting in the past few years dressed up on top and wearing sweatpants on the bottom (you're def lying if you say you haven't). Not to mention Converse being the classic shoe of America which everyone probably has a pair of.

6. Salma Hayek Met Gala 1997
While the Met Gala in the 90s was sometimes a horrific event I think this is one of the few looks that work. It's super cute and the thigh-high with the low gathering on the side of the waist are super cute. The theme was Gianni Versace and she is wearing Atelier Versace.

7. Rihanna Met Gala 2018
She is the Pope of fashion and she governs us all. We will be attending the Church of Rihanna now. I read somewhere that this look was created in three different colors (black, silver, and gold) and they decided to go with the silver.
Designer Maison Margiela Artisanal

8. Billie Eilish Met Gala 2022
I have seen so many people hating on this look but you guysssssss it's INCREDIBLY on point!!! It's based on a portrait from the gilded age of Madame Paul Poirson which was finished in 1885, the height of the Gilded Age. And the colors are amazing and so out of the ordinary. This look wins the night.

9. Lil Nas X Met Gala 2021
This just does it. The opulence speaks for itself. Lil Nas X did what Lady Gaga tried to do at the 2019 Met Gala. The extravagance is SO AMERICAN.
Designer Versace

10. Kid Cudi Met Gala 2022
I didn't know what to include as the last outfit on this list but I read about this outfit on Vogue and how Kid Cudi decided on the final look and I think he did a really good job of adding his style with the choice of blue. (It's not a black suit so it works for me.) It also fits that time period of the theme which for me is the most important aspect of dressing for the Met Gala.
